Ayr Vics
Fastball Club
May 5, 2009
The Vics travelled to Straffordville for their first road game of the season and they came out with the
bats on fire.  Dan Mitchell opened the game with a solo homerun over the centerfield fence.  Before the
Express could settle in Dean Clement, Bob Gillow and Brad Thomson all singled with Gillow driving in
the second run.  Chad Wells later delivered an RBI single and then Scott Freeman came up with a 2
run single in his first at bat with the Vics.  After one half inning the score was 5-0 Vics.  Rookie Dan
Wakeford took to the mound in his debut with the Vics and quickly settled in with the big lead.
In the second inning Mitchell led off with a single and later scored on a Gillow triple to make it a 6-0
lead.  Straffordville responded with one run in the bottom half as they took advantage of a couple infield
errors by the visitors.  Straffordville starter Jason Nesbitt then settled down and held the vics to only
one hit over the next three innings.  In the bottom of the fourth the Express again jumped on Vics errors
and tossed in a couple hits to scrape out 3 more runs to close the gap to 6-4.
In the 6th it was a hit batter, Scott Freeman that led to another Vics run.  Mitchell followed Freeman with
a single then Clement singled to drive in Freeman.
The Vics finally broke it wide open in the 7th inning as Thomson walked, Scott singled, Sayles
delivered a 2 RBI single, Freeman had an RBI double, Mitchell stroked an RBI single, Clement drove
in another with a double, and Gillow drove in the seventh of the inning with a single.  Gillow also took
the mound in relief of Wakeford to start the 6th and closed it out allowing one walk and 5 strikeouts
over two innings.
Final score Vics 13 - Express 4.
Next game Sun. May 10 at home against Harwood Corners.

On a beautiful spring evening the Vics began the 2009 Tri-County fastball campaign with a hard fought
win against the Burgessville Bulls.  Veteran Brad Thomson stepped up to the pitching rubber for the
opener and put on a terrific performance for the home town faithful.
The Vics opened the scoring in the bottom of the first inning as leadoff batter Jordan Hearn drew a
walk and was promptly bunted to second by Graham Scott.  After moving to third on a passed ball
Hearn came home on a groundout by Bob Gillow to plate the first score of the season.  Thomson and
Bulls pitcher Cody Schafsma then settled in and the pitching duel was on.  In the top of the third the
Bulls scratched out a run on two singles.  It was the bottom of the fourth before the Vics managed to
strike again with the help of some Bulls miscues.  After the first two batters were retired Ken Sherk and
Chad Wells drew walks.  On a Jeff Sayles grounder to the pitcher the throw to first was mishandled
allowing Sherk to score and the inning to continue.  Josh Yost drew a walk bringing rookie Mark Perry
to the plate with the bases full of Vics.  The newcomer thrilled the home crowd with a well-placed
single to left field to plate Wells and Sayles.  With a 4-1 lead it was all up to Thomson and he delivered
as he allowed only two more hits over the final four innings for a complete game victory.
Ayr displayed solid defensive play backing up Thomson and keeping the tough Bulls hitters off the
base paths.  Vics lineup:  Hearn (ss), Scott (3b), Gillow (cf), Thomson (p), Sherk (2b), Wells (c), Sayles
(lf), Yost (rf), Perry (1b).
The Vics will be playing this season without longtime coach Jeff Gillow.  The official word is that work
commitments prevented the coach’s return however unconfirmed reports indicate that it was Gillow’s
insistence that the team should switch to short pants and high socks for the upcoming season which
led to a rift in the clubhouse.  Either way the Vics wish Jeff well in his future endeavours.
The next home game is Sunday May 10 against Harwood Corners.

The Vics reprised the Mother’s Day Classic with a Sunday evening tilt against Harwood Corners.  It
looked like it would be a long pitchers’ duel with Brad Thomson hurling for the Vics and John
Klengenberg for Harwood holding the offenses at bay.  The Vics scratched out two runs in the third
starting with a single by Jordan Hearn, a couple wild pitches and an RBI groundout by Ken Sherk.
Then Brad Thomson walked, Graham Scott singled and Chad Wells reached on an error to the first
baseman as Thomson scored.  The lead held until the fifth when the wheels fell off for the home
squad on defense.  Harwood piled on four hits combined with a walk and couple errors by the Vics.
Thomson closed the inning giving up five runs and the home side was left to try and close the gap.
Hearn led off the fifth with a walk and scored after advancing on a passed ball and groundouts by
Sherk and Thomson.  The Vics entered the bottom of the 7th still trailing by two and with two out Sherk
and Thomson singled to put the winning run on base however that was as close as they would come.
Final score Harwood 5 Vics 3.  Vics starting lineup:  Hearn (ss), Sherk (2b), Thomson (p), Scott (3b),
Wells (c), Sayles (cf), Perry (1b), Yost (rf), Wakeford (lf)
Next game for the Vics is Monday May 18 8:30pm at Victoria Park against the Hickson Heat.

After a one week layoff the Vics returned to action at Victoria Park on Monday against the young
Hickson Heat squad.  Rookie Dan Wakeford got the start for the home team and quickly got a preview
of his night ahead as an error led to the opening batter reaching base and scoring after a sacrifice and
a groundout.  The Vics bats awakened quickly on this cold evening as Jordan Hearn led off with a
single and moved to second on a steal.  Bob Gillow then doubled Hearn home for the tying run.  Dean
Clement reached on a fielding error and then Brad Thomson stroked a deep fly over the right field
fence to plate three runs and give the Vics a 4-1 lead.  Hickson answered with one in the second on a
double, sacrifice bunt and single to cut the lead to two.  Ayr got that back plus another as Scott
Freeman singled, Hearn walked and Dean Clement drove in both with a double.  Hickson would not
roll over though as the Vics defense would give them several extra opportunities.  A leadoff single in
the third was followed by a series of four errors on the infield which led to four runs on only two hits.
Wakeford held tough despite the walls crumbling around him and closed out the inning with the score
tied at six.  Josh Brar took the mound for Hickson in the fourth and neither team was able to score in
the fourth or fifth.  Brad Thomson came in to relieve Wakeford in the sixth and after setting the side
down in order Ayr managed to break through in the bottom half as Hearn stroked a two out double
followed by an RBI single by Gillow.  With a chance to close out the game the seventh a ball lost in the
lights inked the Vics eighth error of the night and allowed the leadoff batter to reach second.  Two
batters later a single plated the equalizer.  Thomson recorded a strikeout and groundout to end the
threat and bring the home side to the plate.  The brave fans who stuck around for the finish were
treated to an exciting finish as Thomson opened with a walk, moved to second on a Chad Wells
single then to third on a wild pitch.  After a groundout veteran Graham Scott stepped in a drilled a pitch
to deep center field for an easy sacrifice fly as Thomson charged home with the winner.  The Vics
improved to 3-1 on the season and look forward to a meeting with the undefeated Simcoe Red Devils
on Thursday night.  Next home game for the Vics is Monday May 25 against the Mt. Elgin Mets.

The Vics returned home for a Monday night game against the Mt Elgin Mets.  Unlike last year where
the Mets brought torrential rains with them, this was a dry albeit cold evening for fastball.  Brad
Thomson took the ball for the Vics against Ryan Fewster of the Mets.  The Vics opened with a run in
the first after Dean Clement walked, moved to second on a wild pitch and scored on a single by Chad
"Mickey" Wells.  Ayr struck again in the third as Jordan Hearn and Clement walked and Bob Gillow
singled them home.  The Mets change pitchers to halt the attack but Joel McKie was greeted to the
mound immediately by a Brad Thomson double to score Gillow and the Vics led 4-0.  Thomson was
dominant on the mound for the home side as he cruised through five innings allowing only three
baserunners on a walk, a hit batter and an error.  Mt Elgin finally got to Thomson in the top of the sixth
as the leadoff batter dropped a short ball in front of the plate and beat out the throw to first.  After
retiring the next two Thomson allowed back to back singles which plated the only run of the night for
the Mets.  With the score now 4-1 the Vics went out intent on taking command of the game and
delivered with singles by Jeff Sayles and Vics rookie Seth Allen.  Hearn reached on a fielders choice
and Clement drew his third walk of the game to load the bases for Wells.  "Mickey" promptly dropped a
single onto the outfield grass to plate Allen and restore the four run advantage.  It was then time for
Bob Gillow to close out the night as he lofted a popup between second and centerfield that found the
turf.  With the runners all on the move on two out both Hearn and Clement scored then Wells alertly
barrelled in as the centerfielder had trouble retrieving the ball.  The Vics scored the fourth run of the
inning and secured a mercy rule victory, 8-1.

The Vics travelled to Innerkip for a meeting with the undefeated Eagles on Wednesday night.  Dan
Mitchell got the start for the Vics against veteran Tim Neill for Innerkip.  The Eagles were able to get
five baserunners over the first three innings but Mitchell and the Vics defense held the fort and kept
Innerkip off the board.  The Eagles finally got to Mitchell in the fourth as they strung together three hits
and a walk to plate four runs.  The Vics bats were unable to solve Neill and found themselves staring
at a perfect game bid.  Bob Gillow came in to pitch the fifth and sixth innings and once again closed
the door allowing only one hit.  The Vics threw everything they had at Neill but the crafty veteran picked
it up and struck out the final eight batters to finish off a perfect night on the mound.

The Vics hit the road again as they travelled to Ingersoll for a Wednesday evening tilt against the
Masters.  The Vics bats were about as lively as a twelve year old basset hound on this night as the
offense just could not get off the mark.  Dan Wakeford had the start for Ayr and battled his way out of
trouble for the first three innings but was finally tagged for four runs in the fourth after allowing two
walks and two hits.  Following another walk and a single in the fifth it was time for Bob Gillow to come
on in relief and he was greeting with a double to score the fifth run.  Gillow closed the door from then
on but the story of the game was Masters' hurler Paul Sutton.  Sutton shut down the Vics allowing only
two hits and two walks for the complete game shutout.

The Ayr Vics had only one game last week as they travelled to Woodstock Tuesday evening.  Bob
Gillow put his spotless pitching record on the line for his first start of the season against Shawn
McMahon of the Kelseys.  Woodstock struck first as a sacrifice fly cashed the opening run in the
second inning.  Despite Graham Scott lacing two basehits and Bob Gillow having two walks the Vics
were unable to hit the scoreboard in the first three innings.  Woodstock opened up their lead in the
fourth as they recorded five hits and scored four runs.  With the Kelseys on the verge of a mercy win
Ayr came to life when Ken Sherk tripled and then scored on a groundout by Scott in the fifth.  Sherk
also opened the seventh with a basehit and later scored on a groundout by Dean Clement.   Mark
Koebel doubled to cash in Scott who had walked to close the gap to two runs and bring the tying run to
the plate but that was all the Ayr boys could muster.  Woodstock took the game 5-3 and once again the
Vics left town empty handed.

The boys were ready to redeem themselves in front of a large crowd at home on Sunday as Port
Burwell visited.  Brad Thomson took to the circle for Ayr and the home side broke out early in support
as Gillow, Thomson and Clement loaded the sacks for rookie Rick Gervais who belted his first homer
of the season and a grand slam.  Gillow and Perry scored in the second for a 6-0 lead before Burwell
responded with a 2 run dinger in the third.  Ayr turned up the heat in four as Gillow scored for the third
time then Clement and Freeman trotted home on a deep blast by Mark Koebel.  Thomson closed out
the fifth to secure a 10-3 mercy-rule victory.
